Mystery Thursday Field Trip: The Crime Fiction Academy

Thursday, February 02, 2012

If you're reading this, it stands to reason you love a good mystery.  In fact, you may even be a mystery writer. . . in which case, you'll surely want to read more about the field trip we took earlier this week to the newly founded Crime Fiction Academy situated in the Center for Fiction in New York City's Mercantile Library.

[What's that?  Oh. You were looking for the Links We Like segment?  Right.  Well, that posts on Fridays—come back tomorrow.  But, wait. . . ! Now that you're here, why not stick around, have a read, and share with your friends.  We bet you'll make someone very happy.]

Grand Master and bestselling author, Lawrence Block, signing books after his January 18th event at The Center For Fiction.

In our on-going quest to explore and invent new ways of doing things, we met up with Jonathan Santlofer, the director of the Crime Fiction Academy, and Noreen Tomassi, the director of The Center For Fiction, to brainstorm ways we might work together to bring more visibility to the world of crime fiction.  Turns out, they're doing some pretty cool stuff over there.  The brainchild of Tomassi, Crime Fiction Academy will be the first, on-going, rigorous program dedicated solely to crime writing in all its forms. At last. . . someone, somewhere has taken crime fiction seriously enough to create an in-depth program devoted exclusively to the genre.

The 2012 faculty roster is full of heavy hitters including Lawrence Block, Thomas H. Cook, Susan Isaacs, Dennis Lehane, Harlan Coben, and Laura Lippman to name just a few.

And wait for it. . . not only will aspiring crime writers have the chance to work with some of the greatest crime writers of today, but they'll participate in intensive writing workshops, hear master class lectures, take part in discussions with editors and agents and even have 24-hour access to the center's Writer's Studio.

Classes officially kick-off later this month with a 14-week writing workshop, a monthly Master Class, a crime fiction reading seminar and several special lectures with editors, agents, and more.  If you're interested in learning more, click here to apply.

And be sure to stop by next Thursday when we share some of our favorite Valentine's Day Mysteries.  No doubt about it, love can be murder.

Until then. . . .
