Alix Kates Shulman began her writing career at the height of the feminist and civil rights movements in the 1960s. Her deep involvement in these political movements inspired her to publish such thought-provoking essays and novels as “A Marriage Agreement” and Memoirs of an Ex-Prom Queen.

This excerpt introduces Shulman’s “A Marriage Agreement.” She expresses her struggle to balance family responsibilities and her personal aspirations, and outlines her groundbreaking solution. As women continue to negotiate this challenge, Shulman’s words remain extremely relevant today.

Alix Kates Shulman will be a guest speaker at the Girls Write Now Chapters Reading Series on March 23rd from 6pm – 8pm at the Historic John Street Church in lower Manhattan.  The Girls Write Now program is dedicated to providing the guidance, support and opportunities for high-school girls to develop their creative, independent voices, and write their way to a better future.
